  1. Venice is a city, port, and naval base on the 
  2. North East coast of Italy. It is the capital 
  3. of Veneto region. The old city is built on 
  4. piles on low-lying islands in a salt-water 
  5. lagoon, sheltered from the Adriatic Sea by 
  6. the Lido and other small strips of land. 
  7. There are about 150 canals crossed by some 
  8. 400 bridges. Apart from tourism (it draws 8 
  9. million tourists a year). Industries include 
  10. glass, jewellery, textiles, and lace. Venice 
  11. was an independent trading republic from the 
  12. 10th century, ruled by a doge, or chief 
  13. magistrate, and was one of the centres of the 
  14. Italian Renaissance.
